Feed in Tariff explained

THE GOVERNMENT PAYS YOU TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY - even if you use it.

Here is how you can SAVE and EARN with the new Government Backed Feed-In Tariffs (FiT) or Clean Energy Cash Back scheme, which started on 1st April 2010:

  • EARN For every unit (kWh) of electricity the PV panels generate the government guarantees that you will receive a payment. Tariffs start at 21p per kWh (unit). The government has committed to make these payments for 25 years.
  • SAVE and EARN – by using your solar generated electricity you can gain 21p + 13p per kWh.
You will still receive a payment for each unit even when you use it. Householders currently pay on average 13p per unit, so you save the cost of the unit, in addition to your FIT payment
    .

  • EXPORT – When your solar electricity is fed back into the grid you receive 21p + 3p per kWh.
The solar panels are producing electricity all the time there is sunlight - even when you are on holiday or at work. The government guarantees at least 3p for every unit (kWh) you export.

For a Solar PV system consisting of 10 panels, with a power rating of 2.45kWp, you could expect FIT payments and savings of approximately £600 p.a. With electricity costs expected to rise significantly the system could pay for itself within 10 years.

The FiTS scheme is guaranteed for 25 years with rates being indexed linked and tax free.
